When it’s time to sit down and write a blog post I find that while I enjoy writing these post (and Justin most certainly does not want to take over the blogging duties!), I sometimes struggle to eloquently and succinctly express my thoughts about our clients. Many times I revert back to the same clichés or use the same word one too many times. Writing about Craig and Ericka is proving to be no different than past blogging experiences. Mainly because there is just so much to say!
Where do I start with Craig and Ericka? To begin with, Ericka has known Justin for practically all her life and we were thrilled when she contacted us to photograph her August wedding to Craig. These two lovebirds met as students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and became friends. After college Craig headed to Durham, North Carolina for medical school and Ericka moved to New York City. As the fates would have it, Craig visited NYC for spring break from med school and Ericka offered to show him around the city. And with that offer, a love connection was made! Fast forward a few years to these two living in St. Louis where Craig is a resident in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Washington University/Barnes Jewish Hospital and Ericka just finished up her Family Nurse Practitioner degree at Georgetown University. And that brief synopsis of their history together brings us to their fabulous engagement session!
We picked a weekend for their e-session when we were already going to be in St. Louis for some photography events. But fitting their session into a busy weekend meant we needed to do an early morning photo shoot. I also knew that I wanted to incorporate some props into their engagement pictures but neither Craig or Ericka had any preference, so sky was the limit for me! After searching for some ideas, I decided on balloons! The colors of navy, coral, mint, and gray are ones that I have been obsessed with lately, so those were the balloons we got. What I didn’t anticipate with the balloons was that you are very much at the mercy of the balloons and the wind. Justin would have Craig and Ericka lined up for a beautiful shot and then suddenly the wind would blow, completely covering them up with balloons. Though we struggled a bit with the balloons, I think they add such a lovely touch to some of their photos.
The morning began with pictures in the quiet courtyard just outside of Craig and Ericka’s front door. And then it was off to Forest Park to explore and to see where Craig proposed to Ericka. As you look through their pictures, take notice of the serene, little pond and willow tree. This is where Craig put up a valiant effort to propose to Ericka! He had the spot picked out, created a ruse to get her to the location (friends were meeting them at The MUNY for a play) but it was drizzling and Ericka wanted no part in being out in the rain. After a bit of convincing, Craig got Ericka to the spot and popped the question! We also stopped by the Jewel Box, World’s Fair Pavillion, and finally a little creek running through the park where we got Craig and Ericka to kick of their shoes and brave the water. All in all it was such a lovely morning working with a lovely couple.
Whew! I think I’ve covered as much as I can, as succinctly as I can. Thank you, Craig and Ericka, for agreeing to the early morning session, for putting up with my prop ideas and being such good sports when the balloons just took over (on several occasions!). We cannot wait for your August wedding in St. Louis and to celebrate with family and friends!
Cheers! Piper & Justin
