It’s always fun to photograph your friends, especially when they experience some major life event, such as our friends Todd and Maggie getting engaged! However, there is a real struggle when your friends get engaged – you want to photograph their wedding because you love them and you want to document it…but, sometimes you just want to be a guest. Well, Todd made that decision easy by asking Justin to be a groomsman, which obviously means Justin can’t photograph the wedding. But Todd did want Justin to be part of their engagement journey and wondered if Justin might be able to take some engagement photos of Todd and Maggie. We happily said yes to that proposal!
Every year our group of college friends tries to take a quick weekend trip somewhere during the summer. Many years we’ve traveled to the Lake of the Ozarks for a weekend in the sun. Some years we head up to Chicago to have big city adventure, which is what we did this year. Todd and Maggie were excited at the prospect of doing some destination engagement pictures, so we managed to squeeze in a quick session on our first night in the city.
We started off at the J. Parker, a rooftop bar above the Hotel Lincoln. This bar overlooks Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan, as well as offering unrivaled views of downtown Chicago. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, which also meant the bar was hopping. Luckily the patrons were feeling friendly and let us get right up against the railing so we could take advantage of the spectacular view of the city. After a quick celebratory cocktail in honor of Todd and Maggie, we headed across the street to Lincoln Park to take a stroll. We found ourselves walking around the Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo, which winds itself around the South Pond of the park. This was a fantastic place to wrap up the evening as it gave us so many locations to take photos, as well as a gorgeous view of downtown Chicago from the pond’s bridge.
Thanks, Todd and Maggie, for letting us capture the beginning stages of your engagement. We hope you enjoy the photos and we cannot wait to be guests at your 2016 wedding!
Cheers! Piper & Justin
