Photo of the Week May: 12-18 {Southwest Air}

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Here is a quick photo taken while flying to Las Vegas last weekend. I have been using Instagram on my iPhone to share photos for the last few months, and this picture used an Instagram filter to give it the toning effect.

If you would like to follow me on Instagram you can find me @jkelleyphoto. Be sure to check back next week for another installment of my photo of the week.

Photo of the Week: May 5-11 {Bananas Foster Flames}

Friday, May 11th, 2012

I was the second photographer for a wedding here in Columbia, Mo. last weekend and the bride and groom decided to have bananas foster as the desert at their wedding reception. The staff of the Tiger Hotel put on a great display as they were preparing the dish for everyone in the reception venue to see.

The flames were really impressive so I wanted to try to capture them without over exposing the whole scene. This picture was pretty simple, I had a remote flash high and behind the person who was preparing the desert. The flash provided some rim lighting for the subject and the flames provided the light for his face. Be sure to check back for some more photos from this lovely spring wedding in Columbia Mo.

Photo of the Week: Apr. 21-27 {Volleyball Action}

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

I traveled to Kansas City last weekend to help photograph a large youth volleyball tournament. There were hundreds of teams there competing on more than 150 courts at the same time. We would photograph two to three games every hour for about 12 hours a day. It was a long weekend but it was fun and the time went by really fast because there was so much going on.

Here is one of the thousands of volleyball pictures I shot last weekend.

Photo of the Week: Apr. 14-20 {Senior Portraits}

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

We had a great senior photo session with Hickman High School senior Tina earlier this week. We started out in the woods that back up to Tina’s house and this is where this photo was taken. The woods and stream bed made for a great setting to start off the senior portrait session.

Be sure to check back in a few days for a full blog post from Tina’s senior photos.

Photo of the Week: Apr. 7-13 {Missouri Botanical Garden}

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

We spent part of Easter Weekend in St. Louis and made our annual spring trip through the Missouri Botanical Garden. Spring came really early this year so there weren’t a whole lot of flowers in bloom, but it was still nice to be able to walk around their gorgeous grounds.

This picture is a macro photograph of the center of a yellow peony, and reminds me of coral you might find on the ocean floor.

Photo of the Week: Mar. 24-30 {Wedding Ring Detail}

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

This week’s photo is a ring detail picture from a wedding I helped to photograph in St. Charles, Mo. Taking pictures of rings and figuring out a way to style them can be challenging because they are so small and can have a lot of detail.

Luckily the table centerpieces included branches of flowers that we were able to hang the bride’s beautiful wedding band on. The venue had strands of lights above the area, which I included in the photo to add some graphics and make the picture a little more interesting. This picture was again taken with a macro lens which really lets the details of the ring be shown.

Photo of the Week: Mar. 7-23 {Rainy Day Tulip}

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

The flowers have started to bloom in Columbia over the last week or so, but it seems like it has constantly rained over the last week here. This morning I went out into the drizzle for a few minutes and took a few photographs of the tulips that have began to bloom.

I used a 60 mm macro lens to photograph this yellow tulip with rain drops all over it. I think this photograph looks pretty interesting and as you keep looking at the picture you see new details as you examine the frame.

Photo of the Week: Mar. 10-16 {Rocheport, Mo.}

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

We headed over to the small town of Rocheport, Mo. last weekend to spend some time checking out some of the small shops on a great sunny afternoon. Rocheport is an old river town on the banks of the Missouri River and has some great architecture and historic buildings. Here is a photo of one of the stores in downtown Rocheport, Richard Saunders.

Here is a quick photograph of Brenden from a family portrait session in Columbia, Mo., last weekend. I have had several opportunities to photograph Brenden over the last couple of years. It is always interesting to see how his looks and personality have changed between sessions. Shallow depth of field portrait of 3 year old, Columbia Mo portrait photographer

Photo of the Week: Feb. 25-Mar. 2 {Mizzou Basketball}

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

The Missouri basketball team had their last home game of the season earlier this week, and to celebrate senior night they shot pyrotechnics off of the score board during player introductions. Here is a quick picture of the player introductions before the game got under way.
