Photo of the Week May: 12-18 {Southwest Air}

Friday, May 18th, 2012

Here is a quick photo taken while flying to Las Vegas last weekend. I have been using Instagram on my iPhone to share photos for the last few months, and this picture used an Instagram filter to give it the toning effect.

If you would like to follow me on Instagram you can find me @jkelleyphoto. Be sure to check back next week for another installment of my photo of the week.

Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three {Mojos Columbia, Mo.}

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

I posted one photograph from Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three’s performance at Mojos in Columbia, Mo. a couple of weeks ago, and now here are the rest. If you like American roots music make sure to check them out. The band has been featured on NPR and the BBC and tours worldwide.

Mojo’s is a smaller club and is a great place to catch a show with its intimate setting. It is also on the darker side, I photographed most of the concert with a Nikon 50mm F1.4 lens wide open. The big aperture of the lens helped get a fast enough shutter speed to freeze the action on stage. Music photography is always a challenge with the lack of light and moving musicians, but it can also be a lot of fun.

I actually went to high school with Pokey so it was great to catch up with him. It is always a lot of fun photographing old friends and catching up with them. Here are a few more photos of Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three’s Columbia performance.

Summer of the Holga Wrap Up

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

I worked on a project all summer where I took one photograph a day all summer long using film and a Holga camera. It was a fun and challenging project and I am proud to say that I have been able to get my last roll of film scanned and posted on my Summer of the Holga blog.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from the project, be sure to visit Summer of the Holga to see all of the photos and for some insights into how I thought the project worked out. I am hoping to continue and improve on this little photography project next summer.

Summer of Holga photo project

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

I’m working on a personal project this summer where I am taking a photo a day with my Holga camera. Because the Holga uses film it will be a little slow getting all of the photos posted but I will get them all up eventually. It just takes a little more time to get the film processed, scanned and uploaded. Here are a couple of photos the I like from the first two rolls that I have had developed. I will be posting all the photos from this project at www.holgasummer.wordpress.com

Columbia, Mo. Foggy Tunnel

Friday, July 1st, 2011

At work there are a series of tunnels that we go through to get from our building to the main hospital, during the summer they get especially hot and nasty. Last night as I was walking over to the medical school to shoot an event I noticed the way the light was coming through the tunnel and making shadows on the wall. Going from the cold office to the hot tunnel caused the lens to fog up which I think made the photo a little more eerie and interesting.

Drop, drop, drop

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

The weather wasn’t so hot a couple of nights ago. It was one of those nights that you just want to be inside and find something creative to fill your time with. I’ve always wanted to try water drop photography but never got around to it, so the other night was the perfect opportunity. With the help of a pan, baggie, water, magic arm, and a couple of strobes, I transformed our bathroom into a mini studio. Shooting the water drops was fun and I’m sure I will be doing it again sometime.

Top 10 of 2010

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

Here are a few of my favorite photos from 2010, I think it is always a good exercise to go back and review you work from the previous year to see what you have done and areas you would like to improve in the upcoming year. Looking over the past year has made me realize that I need to get out and shoot more for myself and I have set that as a goal. I have a few projects in mind and will be posting them here throughout the next year.

Here is New Year’s resolution number one: post to this blog more than once every few months. I’m setting a goal for myself to update at least once a week, so stay tuned to see what I’m up to.

Now for my Top 10 of 2010:

Shayden Talbert catches a ball as he settles into his new room at University of Missouri Children's Hospital on September 14. Children's Hospital moved from University Hospital to it's new home at University of Missouri Women's and Children's Hospital.

University of Missouri Health Care's global supply chain department stocks thousands of items from shaving cream to surgical supplies.
